The minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted to an attendance of twenty one members and one guest. A discussion of latest coin shows were addressed and two members reported on the Garden State Numismatic Association Convention and gave their observations of light attendance due to the first afternoon of the show. However, they bought and sold coins to the attending dealers. Another member went to the monthly Parsippany show and made purchases.
Topics of the meeting included Walking Liberty Halve collections, and a Mercury Dime collection housed in a vintage coin album. Old books were presented with reprints of the 1875 Sylvester Crosby’s “Early Coins of America”, Howard Newcomb’s “United States Copper Cents 1816-1857”, and a two volume set on the life of Ulysses Grant. Good Luck Tokens shown were subjects of cowboy Tom Mix, Lucky Lindy, Green River Whiskey and a savings bank horseshoe token with a wheat cent.
Various collectible items presented were an original 1907 newspaper comic strip featuring Mutt, of “Mutt and Jeff” fame, and Jeff was added a year later, a Stone Mountain commemorative half, and novelty radios. Member Frank, visited the Philadelphia Mint and purchased 2019 America the Beautiful Marianna Island quarters and thoughtfully passed a pouch around to members to take one each. Fractional Currency was presented and explained by a member and an album of world coins was displayed by another.
Our next meeting will be our annual June Party complete with Food and drink. Anyone having any “light favorite spirits” to share can do so. Our topics will be: Sports Related items, Washington Silver Quarters, Roosevelt Dimes, your Best Find or Purchase, Coins of Our Ancestors and recent acquisitions.
