The minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted to an attendance of nineteen members.
In the latest coin news, the West Point Mint is now striking 2 million each
of the “America the Beautiful” quarters for 2019, and the U.S. Mint is planning to issue a $10 gold coin in 2020 commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth without congressional approval. Whether they can do this will definitely be up to debate.
The topic of coin banks presented was a variety of examples made from all different materials with some featuring emblems of each particular bank on them as well as the old classic glass “piggy bank”. Coin jewelry was produced was a necklace with a proof Maria Theresa thaler, a buffalo nickel ring, and a cut out liberty nickel.
Oldest coins and other items shown were a circa 330 BC Greek drachm, a Netherlands 1786 Duit, and a fish fossil millions of years old.
Canadian silver coins represented was a 1976 Olympic set of unc. $10 pieces, a 1990 proof set of ten $20 pieces recognizing Pioneers of Aviation, Canadian Zodiac medal and the 400th Anniversary of The Davis Exploration. Miscellaneous items included were novelty radios, Indian cent albums and a weighted Coca Cola can used as a promo included in a case of Coke, containing a $5 bill.
A member concluded an on-going assessment of another members U.S. large cent collection, and another member shared input on collecting currency, informing us on the many ways to collect this subject. This is another example why our club is dedicated in sharing its knowledge with others.
The next meeting, May 20, will entail: Your Oldest Book, (on coins or any other subject), Mercury Dimes, Walking Liberty Halves, South East Mediterranean Countries, and Good Luck Tokens.
