The minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted to an attendance of twelve members and three guests. Up-coming coin and stamp shows were announced as a reminder for those interested in attending.
Among the topics of the month were all types of dimes. Members presented their examples and shared their knowledge of them. A 1902 Barber dime was found while metal detecting in VF condition, another contributed a 1996W Roosevelt dime, the only one minted at the West Point Mint. Also shown were three varieties of seated liberty dimes from 1849, 1853 and 1873. Coins from Central America included the countries of Panama and Costa Rica.
Odd and curious coins and things were: one half of a 1860 seated liberty quarter, cut possibly to make change during the Civil War due to the coin shortage because of hoarding. Curiosities included was an autograph of Teresa de Francisci who modeled for her husband, Anthony, for the Peace Dollar (1921-1935), a fireman’s badge from Teaneck, NJ, and an assortment of knives which was demonstrated by the collector on their uses and workings.
Other collectibles shown was a proof set, with the commemorative Navajo code talkers silver dollar and the member also spoke of his families participation during WWI & WWII. Novelty radios presented were in the shape of a vending machine, and another, an orange.
Our next meeting, November 19, topics are George Washington Quarters, coins from South America and sharing anything having to do with Armistice Day.
