The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted to an attendance of fifteen members and three guests.
Federal bills were a topic, and large and small pieces of currency were presented. A member who collects currency explained the different methods of collecting such as by serial numbers; districts; reprinted notes, known as star notes which are stars printed at the beginning of its serial number; and signatures, just to mention a few.
Coins from France were presented including a 1793 Louis the XVI and 1854 Napoleon III. Dimes presented were bust capped, seated liberty, Barber, and mercury types as well as mercury and Roosevelt collections.
Robert C., a member of the Early American Coppers (EAC), gave an interesting talk on copper cents, highlighting the three types of 1793 cents and distributed informative sheets to members. Half cents and large cents were exhibited as well as 1783 Georgius Triumpho and 1785 Nova Constellatio copper tokens. Also shown were a 1934 National Park postage stamp and a Paul Revere pewter medal.
If any one is looking for certain numismatic items to add to their collections, you can present a “want list” to our members who might be able to help you with your search.
Next meeting, August 20, will focus on any souvenirs of places you have visited including non-numismatic, Large coppers, U.S. Dollar related coins and types, and the works and coins of Augustus St. Gaudens.
