The previous minutes were read and accepted to an attendance of sixteen members including two new members.
This special night was our annual summer party consisting of hero sandwiches, cake and refreshments supplied by the club. Thanks go out to Phil for picking up the food.
Members exhibited this month’s topics, among them was D-Day and military subjects such as, a C-47 paratrooper aircraft that led troops to the beginning of the Normandy invasion, model Sherman and Tiger tanks of the U.S. and Germany, and Matchbox models of famous WWII fighter aircraft. Other militaria were patches and postage stamps of airplanes. Post cards, of New Jersey’s own Camp Merritt, were introduced and explained by another member.
The topic of Baseball collectibles was represented by a replica Babe Ruth signed baseball, postage stamps of baseball players from the past, and a medal collection of famous New York Yankee greats. Also presented was an autographed photo of New York Giant home run hero of 1951, Bobby Thompson.
Our main topic of Coins and medals shown were: a 1652 Pine Tree Shilling, made in Massachusetts when coins were not allowed to be made in the colonies, a St. Patrick farthing, circa 1670 which was an Irish coin brought in to New Jersey for circulation, and a New Jersey 1786 state copper. A 1792 – 1992 200th anniversary medal commemorating the U.S. Mint was also featured.
Members were urged to bring their items to meetings for trading, selling or swapping among them to further or downsize their collections.
Next meeting, July 16th will focus on; French coins, Dimes of all types, Early American Coppers, Federal Currency and other topics of interest.
